Late 19th Century Bronze Gold Weight Depicting a Two-Headed Crocodile. Akan Culture, Ghana

This bronze gold weight, depicting a two-headed crocodile eating a fish, was used to weigh gold dust. Cast by Akan goldsmiths, small gold weights (mrammou) such as this measured gold, the currency of the Akan and potent symbol of kra (life-force), between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries.
